A dearth of adequate infrastructure and services has been recognized as one of the most important roadblocks in the sustainable development of Indian cities. India has underway a plan to tackle the challenges presented by fast urbanization and motorization by accelerating the supply of infrastructure and services.

Since November 2007, CST – India with the aid of the CAI-Asia Center has been developing partnerships to promote sustainable urban transport in India; providing technical assistance to the Indian MoUD and adapting the BRT framing tool to the Indian context as part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility in Asia Program.

The Government of India (GOI) through the Global Environment Facility's Sustainable Urban Transport Project is supporting the implementation of the National Urban Transport Policy (2006).

In 2006, CST - India participated and played an influential role in the launch of the Ministry of Urban Development’s National Urban Transport Policy which stressed the mobility of people rather than vehicles.
