On September 1, 2008, EMBARQ officially opened its first project office in India. Located in Parel, Mumbai, EMBARQ-India’s new home was made possible by the generous support of WRI board member, Jamshyd Godrej.
The office will manage day-to-day project activities in the country, and help pave the way for EMBARQ-India becoming a full-fledged ‘Center for Sustainable Transport’ within the EMBARQ Network (EMBARQ currently has centers in Mexico and Brazil). In the coming months, the office will continue to scale-up its activities, with the goal of becoming a leader in efforts to address the connections between environment, development, and transport in Indian cities.
EMBARQ has already been active in India, having worked with Indore City Transport Service Limited and the Urban Mass Transport Company (UMTC) to provide technical support for the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit systems in Indore and Pune, respectively. EMBARQ has also teamed with the Bangalore Metropolitan Land Transport Authority, City Connect Foundation, and Interface for Cycling Expertise to promote non-motorized transport (i.e. walking and biking) in Bangalore.
